Ham Bean Chowder Recipe
- 1 pound dry great northern beans
- 2 quarts. water
- 1 4 pound ham shank
- 1 (16 ounce.) can tomatoes, minced
- 2 c. minced onions
- 1 c. minced celery
- 2 tbsp. garlic, chopped
- 2 whole cloves
- 1 bay leaf
- 1/4 teaspoon fresh grnd pepper
- 3 (10 ounce.) cans condensed chicken broth
- 8 ounce. shredded Cheddar cheese
- Parsley
- Wash beans.
- Cover beans with water in 6 qt saucepot; bring to boil.
- Cover, boil 2 min longer.
- Remove from heat.
- Let beans soak 1 hour.
- Drain, reserving liquid.
- Return beans to pot.
- Add in 4 c. reserved liquid, meat, vegetables, seasonings and chicken broth combined with sufficient water to measure 6 c.. Bring to boil; simmer 3 hrs or possibly till beans are done and meat will fall from bone easily.
- Remove meat, bay leaf and cloves.
- Cut meat off bone, return to soup.
- Skim off fat.
- Add in cheese and stir till melted.
- Garnish with parsley.
- Good crockpot recipe.
