Molasses Cookies A.K.A. Ginger Cookies (Christmas)
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup vegetable shortening
- 1 cup molasses
- 1 each eggs beaten
- 1 teaspoon baking soda disolved in 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 teaspoon cloves
- 1 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ginger
- 7 cups flour, all-purpose unsifted
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Cream shortening, add sugar gradually, then molasses and beaten egg.
- Combine baking soda and hot water.
- Add to the first mixture.
- Sift together flour, salt, and spices.
- (May want to sift several times until well blended.)
- Stir in dry ingredients, and blend thoroughly.
- Chill in refrigerator for several hours.
- Roll out on a well-floured board.
- (Add more flour if dough is too soft.)
- Cut into figures.
- Bake at 350F (180C) for 8 to 10 minutes.
- Decorate cookies if desired.
