Homemade Bread
- 1 cake or pkg. yeast
- 1/4 c. lukewarm water
- 2 c. scalded milk
- 3 Tbsp. sugar
- 1 Tbsp. salt
- 3 Tbsp. shortening
- about 5 c. sifted all-purpose flour
- Soften yeast in water.
- Add sugar, salt and shortening to hot milk.
- Cool to lukewarm, then stir in two cups of flour.
- Add softened yeast.
- Add just enough more flour to form a moderately stiff dough.
- Turn out on a lightly floured board or cloth.
- Cover dough with a bowl and let rest 10 minutes.
- Knead dough until smooth (5 to 10 minutes).
- Shape dough into a ball and place in a lightly greased bowl turned greased side up.
- Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled.
- Punch down and let rest 10 minutes. Divide dough in half and shape into two loaves.
- Place shapes loaves in greased bread pans.
- Brush tops with melted shortening. Let rise in a warm place until about two inches over the top of pan.
- Place on a low rack in a 400u0b0 oven and bake 35 minutes. Makes two loaves of bread.
