Candy Cane Cookies
- 1/2 c. soft butter or margarine
- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 c. confectioners sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 tsp. almond extract
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 2 1/2 c. flour
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. red food coloring
- Preheat oven to 350u0b0.
- In a large mixing bowl, add butter, shortening, confectioners sugar, egg, almond extract and vanilla. Mix thoroughly with a wooden spoon.
- Blend in flour and salt gradually.
- Divide dough in half.
- Keep half in large bowl, put other half in another mixing bowl.
- Add red food coloring to one half.
- Shape one teaspoon of dough (each color) into a 4-inch rope.
- For smooth, even ropes roll back and forth on floured board.
- Place ropes side by side, lightly press together and twist.
- Place on ungreased baking sheet.
- Curve top down to form handle of cane.
- Bake about 9 minutes until set.
- Very light brown.
- Remove from cookie sheet immediately.
- Makes 4 dozen cookies.
